The area of operation of HAC is Þingeyjarsýslur, North and South, or from Vaðlaheiði í in the west and east of Bakkafjörður. The are covers about 18% of the country and the driving distance along the coast between the ends of the area is about 300 km.
Almost 5000 people live in the area between 6 municipalities, those are Skútustaðahreppur, Þingeyjarsveit, Norðurþing, Tjörneshreppur, Langanesbyggð and Svalbarðshreppur. The area is very extensive but also rural. The form of residence is varied. Húsavík is the largest urban center with about 2300 people, but smaller urban areas are in Þórshöfn, Raufarhöfn, Kópasker, Mývatnssveit and Laugar. There are also extensive agricultural districts in the counties, both North and South Þingeyjarsýsla.
Þingeyjarsýslur are very diverse in terms of nature. Many remarkable natural phenomena can be found in the area, both in the field of geology and biology, which provide material for a variety of research activities. In Þingeyjarsýslum there are large nature reserves, like the national park in Jökulsárgljúfur and the Laxár and Mývatn area. (See more: www.nna.is)
