Work package two of the Erasmus+ project NICHE recently concluded, which involved partners analysing real-life situations in professions related to intangible cultural heritage.\u202fA need for training among the relevant professionals was identified, and the sector's development was mapped. Each participant reported on the findings regarding the situation in their own country, and a summary of these reports will form the basis for the project's third work package.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The aim of NICHE is to promote entrepreneurship in the field of intangible cultural heritage.\u00a0<\/span>by developing training pathways and educational materials that strengthen and increase competitiveness and\u00a0<\/span>entrepreneurial work.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The NICHE project is a two-year project which began at the end of 2020 and will conclude in 2022. It is funded by a grant from Erasmus+, the EU's cooperation programme. There are nine participants in the project, who come from seven European countries; Iceland, Belgium, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Sweden. The project was applied for in Iceland and is managed by the \u00deingeyja Knowledge Network. The partner in Iceland is N\u00fdheimar, the Knowledge Centre in H\u00f6fn, Hornafj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The conclusion of the Icelandic partners is that there is scope to improve the preservation, documentation and education of intangible cultural heritage in Iceland. Even though Iceland is rich in intangible cultural heritage and related activities, research, data, legal frameworks, and formal and informal education are lacking. For example, intangible cultural heritage is not found in the Cultural Monuments Act No. 80\/2012, the 2013 Cultural Policy of the Icelandic Government, or in the Statistics Iceland database. Despite this, many institutions and organisations base their work, in part or in whole, on the intangible cultural heritage of Iceland.\u202fIt should be borne in mind that these findings do not reflect the diversity of Icelandic cultural heritage, its practices or related activities.\u202fIceland has a rich cultural environment and a relatively high employment rate in the cultural sector, compared to other European countries. With an improved legislative framework, a greater focus on related research, data and education, as well as cooperation between educational institutions and the government, public awareness of this wealth can be increased and the preservation of Iceland's intangible cultural heritage better ensured. The utilisation and innovation in the field of intangible cultural heritage could create significant opportunities for Icelandic business, the countryside and tourism.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
