STEM H\u00fasav\u00edk offered families a bus tour of H\u00fasav\u00edk and the surrounding area yesterday afternoon, to mark the ongoing NorthQuake 2022, an international earthquake conference now being held for the fourth time in H\u00fasav\u00edk. <\/p>\n

The journey first went north out of town, driving over the moraine that runs around Laugardal, above Tra\u00f0ager\u00f0i, and up H\u00fasav\u00edkurfjall to \u00deeistareykir. At Tra\u00f0ager\u00f0i, the group got out and walked up to a gorge that lies there. The gorge is remarkable because a section of it has been displaced by 50 m. Next, we drove through H\u00fasav\u00edk, where we learnt that the town's buildings are situated on different ground, which affects how we feel the shaking from earthquakes. The journey finally headed up Grj\u00f3t\u00e1ls, where there was a good view of the H\u00fasav\u00edk-Flatey Fault.
\nThe final words of the trip concerned prevention at home. To use the words of another tour guide from the trip: "Don't have a heavy object above Grandad's armchair."\u201c<\/p>\n

STEM H\u00fasav\u00edk received a grant from the Nor\u00f0ur\u00feing arts and culture fund to offer the trip. It was well attended, with around 22 guests taking advantage of this unique opportunity.
\nThe guides were Benedikt Halld\u00f3rsson, a geotechnical engineer, and Sigurj\u00f3n J\u00f3nsson, a geophysicist. <\/p>\n
