{"id":24040,"date":"2026-06-29T13:13:37","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T13:13:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hac.is\/?p=24040"},"modified":"2026-06-24T13:40:03","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T13:40:03","slug":"gefum-islensku-sens-samfelagid-sem-kennslustofa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hac.is\/en\/2026\/06\/29\/gefum-islensku-sens-samfelagid-sem-kennslustofa\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#x27;s give Iceland a chance \u2013 society as a classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past year, the knowledge network has placed increased emphasis on the project. <em>Let&#x27;s give the Icelandic a chance<\/em>, which is based on a simple but effective philosophy: that society itself is an extension of the classroom, and that each and every one of us can take on the role of a public teacher of Icelandic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project aligns well with the role of the Knowledge Network as a centre for lifelong learning, community development and inclusion. The aim is to create more opportunities to use Icelandic in daily life, thereby strengthening both the status of the language and the participation of people of foreign origin in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main role of the public language teacher is to offer Icelandic for communication, regardless of the interlocutor&#x27;s proficiency level. Such opportunities arise every day in shops, restaurants, workplaces, social activities and other public spaces. A public teacher is patient, speaks clearly and encouragingly, repeats when necessary, and helps to explain words and concepts. Most importantly, however, they are prepared to communicate in Icelandic and show respect for the effort involved in learning a new language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project reminds us to always offer Icelandic first. Icelandic is the key to participation in society, and most people who settle here want to learn the language and become active participants in Icelandic society. At the same time, societal changes and increased globalisation have led to English becoming more prominent in everyday communication. However, through a joint effort, we can create more opportunities to use Icelandic and strengthen its position for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The knowledge network has an integrated ideology <em>Let&#x27;s give the Icelandic a chance<\/em> into its many projects, including Icelandic language teaching for immigrants, the project <em>The Travelling Teacher \u2013 Icelandic at the workplace<\/em> and various social events that promote increased language use and relationship-building. These include a Christmas carol sing-along, card nights at St\u00e9ttin, and a variety of social get-togethers where people meet, get to know each other, and practise their Icelandic in an informal setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following this, H\u00fasav\u00edk Academic Centre plans to hold an open house and a day of presentations on 3 September. This will give community organisations, cultural activities, sports clubs and other community groups the opportunity to present their work, meet residents and forge new connections. The aim is to make it easier for people to find their place in the community, learn about the diverse opportunities available, and encourage participation in social, cultural and leisure activities. The event is also part of promoting social participation, fostering inclusion and creating more opportunities for communication in Icelandic in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The core of these events is simple: to create a platform for conversation. When people meet and talk together, opportunities for learning, friendship, and mutual understanding are created. Such events not only promote improved Icelandic language skills but also the inclusion of people of foreign origin and stronger community ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Let&#x27;s give the Icelandic a chance<\/em> It is therefore an important addition to formal Icelandic language learning. The project highlights that a language is not learned solely in the classroom, but in the interactions between people.
