The Network of Knowledge of the Thingeyingis never goes on summer holiday, although its staff, of course, take their leave like everyone else. From the very beginning, emphasis has been placed on the organisation being operational all year round and able to carry out its duties whenever required. In many ways, the operations of the Knowledge Network are seasonal. The traditional academic year framework characterises the activities of the Continuing Education Department and services for university students, as the start of the autumn term in August brings a demand for services from students and also sets out the provision and academic services for adult education. Research project work, however, is often carried out at a different pace and is less dependent on the academic calendar. In the summer, data collection for research projects often takes place, for example, the Knowledge Network's survey this summer, which is exploring the impact of film-making on the arrivals of foreign tourists.
This coming autumn, there will be much going on under the wide umbrella of the Knowledge Network, as the autumn term of the continuing education programme approaches and university students make their presence felt towards the end of August to seek services for the winter. Hraðið – the Innovation Centre has many tenants with office space, and there are always some changes each autumn as new companies or individuals join the group. The same applies to Kistuna in Þórshöfn and Gíg in the Mývatn area, where it is not uncommon for there to be changes in the group of tenants in the clusters in the autumn. Meanwhile, preparations are currently underway for DesignThing, the Hraðinn design festival, which is held in early October.
