At the annual general meeting of the North-East Knowledge Network, it was announced that Aðalsteinn Árni Baldursson was stepping down from his position as chairman of the network's board. Aðalsteinn, or 'Kúti' as he is known, has led the organisation's board since its foundation, for over 20 years. Prior to that, he even served on the board of the Þingeyjar Adult Education Centre, which pioneered adult education services in the region, before the Knowledge Network took over that activity. Aðalsteinn Árni did not seek re-election to the board at the general meeting and suggested that others, including colleagues from the business community, should take over his role.
It is no secret that the organisation has often had to work hard for its achievements, and its management has had to clear obstacles of various kinds, particularly in its early years. These challenges have required a solid support base from the board, and the chair has often had a considerable burden to bear. The Knowledge Network began its operations in 2003 with a single employee and limited projects, but has since continually added new projects and areas of activity. The organisation now leads a cluster of around 50 staff in knowledge, research and innovation work at the Stéttinni in Húsavík.
Óli Halldórsson, director of the Knowledge Network, has worked with Aðalsteinn all these years and, at the meeting, expressed his sincere thanks to Aðalsteinn Árni for their close and successful collaboration. However, a great emphasis will continue to be placed on maintaining the Knowledge Network's strong and close collaboration with the trade unions in the Þingeyjar regions, where Aðalsteinn Árni serves as chairman of the Framsýn trade union.
