How is the assessment of practical skills used?

Birta Guðlaug Amlin is a 27-year-old from Húsavík who undertook a skills assessment in 2024. She works as a healthcare assistant at HSN and here she shares her experience of undertaking the skills assessment and training. in the aftermath:

Which practical assessment did you take?
I took a practical assessment for the nursing bridge programme.

Why did you choose to do a skills assessment?
I had been working in nursing care for six years at that time and felt how much I was interested in the nursing programme. Therefore, I decided to take a skills assessment to see how much my work experience had taught me, as my goal was to become a nurse. My friends had taken the assessment and spoke very highly of it and the results it gave them.

How did you find the process?
I found it enjoyable and much easier than I had thought it would be. It wasn't at all like an interview, as I had expected. More like a conversation about my experience and how I would handle certain situations at work.

How has the practical assessment been useful to you?
It has been very useful to me. The practical skills assessment, among other things, meant that I graduated from the nursing programme this May, and it is very useful in my work on the medical ward.

The skills assessment also gave me a lot of confidence to carry on and go to university, as I hadn't had that confidence before.

What are your next steps?
I am planning to pursue further education in the future.

Would you recommend a skills assessment?
Yes, I highly recommend it. For me, it was a great first step on the path to further study and career development.
