The annual Fab Lab Boot Camp was held in Húsavík from 21st–23rd May. This is a three-day event where staff from the Fab Lab workshops from all over the country come together to strengthen collaboration, share knowledge and develop new ideas.
This year's programme included, among other things, presentations on the latest equipment, metal milling, programming LED strips, mould making in new equipment, and volumetric scanning. A special emphasis was placed on automated systems, with the new irrigation and temperature control system for the greenhouse being a key topic. The system will be installed in the new Fab Lab Húsavík greenhouse in the port at Stéttina in the coming days. It is planned to teach the workshop's users how to build their own greenhouse and install the system in it during courses next winter.
The atmosphere in Húsavík was fantastic, and the town's amenities were made full use of after the programme had finished. Guests took a dip in the sea baths, visited Húsavík Öl and went sea fishing, which provided a fun change of pace for the event.
The role and objectives of the Fab Lab workshops
Fab Lab (Fabrication Laboratory) workshops are part of a global network and provide the public with access to digital technology and innovation expertise. The aim of Fab Lab Iceland is to enable people to realise their ideas with the help of computer-aided design and digital technology. In Iceland, the Fab Lab workshops play an important role in supporting entrepreneurs, students, artists and business by offering facilities, guidance and knowledge to develop and test new solutions. They increase access to innovation and enable the countryside to take an active part in digital development.
