Today took place Annual meeting of the Centre for the Continuing Professional Development of the Business Sector which is a collaborative platform for adult and vocational education in the Icelandic labour market.
On the occasion of the meeting, the country's adult education and training centres are asked each year to nominate individuals as role models in further education. As is customary, individuals who have participated in the resources of the adult education centres, which operate through agreements and funding from the National Centre for Adult Education, are considered.
We are delighted to announce that the recipient this time is Sunna Rae Isaksen George, who has shown exceptional diligence and ambition in her studies and has been a fine example to others in taking opportunities for learning and development through further education.
Sunna grew up in both Iceland and New Zealand, and as a result, her educational background was unconventional. She found it difficult to have her previous studies recognised within the Icelandic school system. When she moved to Húsavík, she sought advice on further study from Þekkingarnetið. There, she completed a competence-based assessment for nursery assistants and support workers, and then graduated at the end of 2021 with a qualification in those fields. She did this at the same time as having her first child. Following this, Sunna worked at the residential home Hvammi and the Grænuvellir nursery school in Húsavík. Today, she is studying to become a teacher at the University of Akureyri and envisages a future working with children.
Sunna is a great example of resilience and determination, and shows how education can open doors to new opportunities.
