On Friday, 28th November, the North East Iceland Knowledge Network held an event at the Museum House in Húsavík, in collaboration with the multicultural officer of Norðurþing.
The event was part of the programme, My Christmas town. It was an opportunity to get together for a sing-along of Christmas carols in Icelandic, in a cosy atmosphere where everyone could take part at their own pace. We thank everyone who came and took part.
Then the concept was introduced. Public lecturer, but community tutors are individuals in the local area who support immigrants in using Icelandic in daily communication. Visitors to the Museum and many of those working in service roles in the town received badges and information about the initiative.
The project is based on the concept and content of the campaign. Let's give the Icelandic a chance which can be found on the website: www.gefumislenskusens.is
Its emphasis is that a language is learned through communication and by people showing patience, listening, repeating and creating situations for the use of Icelandic:
…to promote greater opportunities for people to use Icelandic in the broadest and most diverse way, and that people who are learning the language, whatever stage they are at, receive the support and understanding of those who are proficient in Icelandic.„
The next event will be on 16 December from 16:00 to 18:30 at Stéttinni. There will be musical bingo, a cosy get-together, arts and crafts, and a good chat in Icelandic about Christmas traditions.
