HSN – First Aid 4 hours

This course is for anyone who wants to learn or refresh the basics of first aid and psychological support, and to gain the basic skills to assist the injured or ill in an emergency. A short and effective course for everyone. 

Objective:  

For participants to acquire basic skills in applying first aid and psychological support in emergency situations. 

Subject: 

  • Introduction; what is first aid? 
  • Fundamentals; emergency stress, emotional responses after providing first aid, psychological support and infection prevention. 
  • The four steps of first aid: ensure the scene is safe, assess the condition of the injured or ill, get help and give first aid. 
  • Basic life support and automated defibrillation; checking response, opening the airway, checking breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the automated external defibrillator (AED), the chain of survival, side-lying position and removal of foreign bodies from the airway. 
  • First aid; a brief overview of internal and external bleeding, burns, head injuries, chest pain (heart attack), anaphylaxis and stroke. 

Educational material 

Teaching slides. The publisher of the educational material is the Red Cross in Iceland. 

Entry requirements 

Participants must be 14 years of age or older. It is advisable that participants familiarise themselves with the educational material before the course begins. 

Assessment 

Performance is assessed continuously throughout the course. It is not compulsory to complete a written or practical exam. 

Acknowledgement 

After completing the course, participants receive a certificate from the Icelandic Red Cross and the Ministry of Welfare.  

Refresher training is recommended every other year. 

Contents 

Four steps of first aid 

  • Ensure safety at the scene 
  • Assess the condition of the injured or ill 
  • Get help 
  • Give first aid 

Basic life support and automated external defibrillation 

  • Check for a response, open the airway and check for breathing 
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) 
  • Automated cardiac defibrillation (use of AED devices) 
  • Foreign body in the airway 

First Aid and Injuries 

  • Internal and external bleeding 
  • Burns and burn wounds, 
  • Injuries to the head, neck or back 

First Aid and Sudden Illness 

  • Chest pain 
  • Anaphylaxis 
  • Stroke 
  • Flight 
  • Diabetes 
  • Difficulty breathing 

Emotional support 

  • Stress in emergencies 
  • Emotional reactions after giving first aid 
  • Emotional support
